Casadevall advocates for innovation and collaboration among companies to overcome regulatory challenges and cost barriers, during the opening and closing remarks at the congress on packaging held on November 28 and 29 in Barcelona, which brought together leading brands and stakeholders across the sector and value chain
Gemma Casadevall, General Manager of NutraResearch, emphasized the pivotal role of the pharmaceutical industry in sustainability. The congress, titled “Navigating the Next Era in Pharma Packaging, Labeling, and Supply Chain Management”, served as a key event for European industry professionals, including pharmaceutical firms and companies from across the value chain.
Sharing progress and best practices
The aim of the gathering was to share advancements and best practices in pharmaceutical packaging. In her addresses, Casadevall highlighted the critical aspects shaping the future of the field.
In her opening remarks, she stressed the significance of the current moment for the sector: “We are here not just to discuss a trend but to address a necessity—an urgent call to action in one of the most critical sectors of the global economy. The pharmaceutical and healthcare industries are entrusted with ensuring the well-being of millions worldwide, and with this responsibility comes the moral imperative to protect the health of our planet”, she stated, welcoming attendees that included key industry leaders.
As part of the congress, NutraResearch showcased its notable contribution: an innovative sustainable blister pack designed to replace traditional formats made from non-recyclable combinations of plastic and aluminum.
Sustainability as a Strategic Priority
Sustainability, which is transforming the industry, has become a strategic priority in the pharmaceutical sector. This transformation involves rethinking “how we source materials, design packaging, and deliver products without compromising safety, efficacy, or accessibility,” Casadevall explained during the inaugural session.
Discussions during the congress addressed the justification for investments needed to adopt greener practices, current challenges, and innovative solutions. According to Casadevall, tackling these issues requires “a careful balance between innovation, regulatory compliance, cost management, and a shared vision for a sustainable future.”
For the NutraResearch CEO, “Sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry is not only about reducing carbon footprints or meeting environmental goals. It’s also about ensuring the long-term viability of our supply chains, safeguarding patient health through responsible packaging, and building trust with stakeholders who increasingly value environmental commitment.”
Innovation and collaboration among companies
After two days of shared insights, Casadevall concluded that “the industry is moving in the right direction,” though she acknowledged that “there is still a long way to go.”
Material innovation is advancing to prove that “eco-efficiency and functionality can go hand in hand”. However, she emphasized that collaboration among companies, legislators, and key stakeholders is essential to “overcome regulatory challenges and cost barriers.”
Casadevall underscored that shared vision, joint effort, synergy, and corporate cooperation would propel the sector forward. “The road ahead may not be easy, but it is necessary. By investing in sustainable practices, we are investing in a healthier, more resilient future—not only for our businesses but for the world at large,” she remarked.
The General Manager of NutraResearch expressed confidence that the congress provided inspiration for taking “bold steps” and strengthening the commitment to making sustainability “a cornerstone” of operations.
